Hello My Fellow Foodies and welcome to another installment of Must Order Menu Items in San Antonio Right Now, this is “The Sandwich Edition”. We all love a good sandwich and chances are you probably have a go-to spot in your back pocket for whenever you do crave one. Well, myself (Joe) and Hermes have amassed a list of some of the city’s best. There’s a variety of sandwiches on this list and they all hit. Trust us, we did the leg work and personally tried all these ourselves. Remember, they are not racked and stacked, they are not numbered, it’s simply 13 sandwiches made by local spots that very much deserve your attention. Let’s get to it then!

La Taqueria De Monterrey: Torta Deshebrada

We start off the list with a Torta (Mexican Sandwich) because San Antonio holds some really good ones. Like this Torta Deshebrada from La Taqueria de Monterrey. Super tender and savory braised beef is the protein that’s stuffed in this one. Fresh lettuce and tomato add fresh textures along with a Mexican cream for moisture and avocado. They use a top tier loaf for their sandwiches that produces tons of texture and flavor after it’s flattened and seared. A great sandwich to start this list and one you should definitely check out soon!

RoHo Pork & Bread: Torta Ahogada

It would be a travesty to leave this next sandwich off the list. Why? Well, because the Torta Ahogada at Roho Pork & Bread is too damn good to leave off. House baked Birote Salado (sourdough) stuffed with tender flavorful carnitas, velvety beans, topped with angle hair cabbage, sliced radish all drowned in a nice tomato based red sauce. It’s super flavorful, filling, and messy. Want it spicy? RoHo has you covered with an additional spicy red sauce to top your already topped torta. This is the way I like to enjoy a good sandwich from time to time. Food & Wine Magazine named it the Best Sandwich in Texas in 2021, and once you try it, at the very least, it’s in the conversation. Definitely get your hands on this one! Check em out on Instagram

Max & Louie's New York Diner: Broadway Deli Dip

We had to include a sandwich from Max & Louie's because, well you know why. They serve big delicious food and they have a wide variety of sandos. Our favorite is this French Dip style sandwich that synchs some flavorful roast beef together with this onion roll, mozzarella cheese and a side of some of the most decadent au jus you will ever taste. This dish comes with a house made pickle that acts as a palette cleanser of sorts and the entire dish is just perfect. Max and Louie's has a big selection of sandwiches but this just happens to be our favorite one. This NY Diner is open Daily from 7am - 9pm. You can reach them at 210-483-7600 And you can follow them on Instagram or Facebook! they are located at 226 W Bitters Rd #126, San Antonio, TX 78216

Mí Corazon: El Cubano (Cuban Sandwich)

Now 8 months back in the game after a horrific car accident that left him watching from the sidelines for nearly a year, Chef Carlos Espino is back making this city a really dope Cuban Sandwich. Low and slow cooked and well seasoned shredded pork are the anchor for this bad boy. Ham, Swiss Cheese, Mustard, Pickles all join the pork inside the party as well. Chef has his bread shipped in from Florida to maintain some authenticity and once it’s seared to a crispy outer layer it takes all other ingredients to the next level. It’s this truck’s most popular menu item and one sandwich you gotta order now!

The Beignet Stand: The Breakfast Beignet

Need a clutch morning Sando to add to your list? Don’t worry, we got you, and this is not your grandpa’s favorite breakfast sandwich either. The folks at The Beignet Stand created a decadent bacon, egg, and cheese sandwich using a savory beignet as the envelope. All stuffed with a soufflé style egg, savory bacon and white American cheese. The garlic butter baste over top of the beignet is a nice detail I appreciate. This one will go in the top tier of your breakfast sandwich catalog, so ordering this one is a must!

Location: 8343 Broadway, San Antonio, TX 78209 Hours: Wed - Fri 7am - 2pm

Taquitos MB, El Sazón Norteño: La Fajita Torta

A nice morning sandwich should be followed by a late night option for those night owl club goers. This little black food truck feeds many on the strip who find themselves out enjoying that social night life. After the party we always seek that grub to kill the buzz or bring us some comfort before we pack it up and say our good nights. A great option in this area is La Fajita Torta from Taquitos MB. Nicely chopped and well seasoned fajita are featured in this sandwich. Along side tomato, lettuce, avocado, refried beans, crema and quesadilla cheese. They source their Torta rolls from La Tapatia Bakery which is a really nice touch. So when the lights go out, keep this one in mind because this is definitely one of the city’s must order sandwiches.

Gino’s Deli: Philly Cheesesteak

When you talk about really great sandwiches in the city of San Antonio this one has to be in the conversation. Gino’s Deli is no stranger to lists, recently being named 7th Best Restaurant in Texas, according to Neighborhood Eats Kens 5 CBS, and being named #21 of 100 places to eat in America by Yelp in 2020. Their Philly consists of thinly sliced beef ribeye, onions, tomatoes, peppers, and melty gooey cheese. Housed in a quality roll sourced in from New Braunfels. It’s beefy, cheesy and savory. Simply put, it’s a must try sandwich. Also, the service at Gino's makes you feel like you are a part of their family. So if you take anything away from this piece on Gino’s it’s this, Go Now! Order the Philly and Enjoy! Pro Tip: Oder it with Extra Cheese!

Loncheria El Popo

While these lonches may seem small they do pack a powerful flavor punch. Popo has been in business for over 60 years! This Mexican import is a gem in this San Antonio growing food scene. Their recipe has not changed, the service is great, they're inexpensive and the lonches are absolutely delicious. Loncheria El Popo makes everything fresh, nothing is left over from the night before, the bread is delivered daily from Mexico, you read that right... Daily! The beef is shredded daily and you can taste the quality in each lonche. The word lonche is basically a sandwich and we could not have written this list without mentioning this location. You can find Loncheria Popo on Instagram and Facebook. They are located at 6557 San Pedro Ave, San Antonio, TX 78216 and are open Tue-Sat 12p - 10p and Sunday & Monday 12p - 8p

Sari-Sari Supper Club: The Fili-B-Steak

I had only planned to have one Philly style sandwich on this list, but after trying the Fili-B-Steak from Sari-Sari Supper Club, there was no way I could leave it off. A nice toasted hoagie roll stuffed with thinly sliced Ribeye, grilled onions, peppers and a melty gooey Swiss cheese. What makes this sandwich unique is that Filipino touch. Chef Adrian Abella uses a savory bistek sauce to give the sandwich a unique Filipino fused flavor. Honestly, once I picked this sandwich up, I never set it down. I just slowly watched it get smaller and smaller until it was all gone. This most certainly is a must order sandwich in San Antonio!

Down On Grayson: Crispy Chicken Sandwich

Probably the most balanced sandwich on this list. The Crispy Chicken Sandwich from Down on Grayson elevates this sando with crisp freshness all while maintaining its integrity as a chicken sandwich. It consists of a panko crusted chicken fillet, baby swiss, tomatoes, pickles, house-made balsamic slaw & garlic aioli. For me the balsamic slaw really adds that nice radiant acid element and texture this sandwich needs. A sandwich that makes you believe that every bite is just as good as the first one is good sandwich indeed. A really well put together sando where freshness is kept at the forefront. You just gotta try this one! Location: 303 E Grayson St, San Antonio, TX 78215

Hours: Sun - Wed 11am -10pm & Thur-Sat 11am -11pm

Krazy Katsu: Asian Hot Honey Chicken Sandwich

One good chicken sandwich deserves another. Krazy Katsu is the new kid on the block, As their doors have been opened for less than 2 months. These folks are hitting with panko crusted chicken sandwiches the size of small hubcaps and with big flavor to boot. Our personal favorite is the Asian hot honey chicken sandwich. It has panko fillet, Kewpie Mayo, butter lettuce, and that house made Asian hot honey, all between a locally sourced Hawaiian style Bun. This sandwich is simple, but man does it deliver and keeps you licking your fingers. Sweet, Savory, Crispy, that also holds a nice subtle textural bite from that butter lettuce. It keeps me coming back bite after bite. Trust us, this is sandwich you have to order! Check em out on Instagram

Singh’s Vietnamese: Brisket Banh-Mi

The Brisket Banh-Mi from Singh’s would not be denied from this list. Once you try it, it becomes a go-to when visiting this spot in the future. It holds simple fresh ingredients, but Man O’ Man does it hit! Smokey tender brisket, pickled carrots, fresh sliced jalapeños, cilantro, and a creamy aioli make it’s home in a locally sourced bolillo roll. Its got smoke, texture, freshness and comfort. It’s so simple but all the ingredients just hum and elevate one another. This one is definitely one of my favorites on this list and a sandwich you absolutely have to try!

Pro Tip: Make it Spicy for a nice kick of heat!

Carnitas Don Raúl: La Torta Moreliana

I mean, we started this list with a Torta and it only seems fitting that we end it with one. This sandwich however in no run of the mill bun stuff creation. The protein in this one is truly blessed and it’s what makes this sandwich a must order. Carnitas Don Raúl has been featured on Netflix in the Taco Chronicles so their carnitas are considered some of the best in the world. So when they convert these carnitas in to sandwich form, Sheeesh! It really speaks to sandwich lovers everywhere. This Torta consists of their super flavorful and tender carnitas, refried beans, melty cheese, and avocado. The bolillo roll holds it all together with a nice sear and texture. This Mexican sandwich is probably the most comforting on this list and hits my soul every time I order it. So visit this truck and get blessed, because this too is a Must Order! Carnitas Don Raul can be found at 2202 Broadway, San Antonio, TX 78215
